Essential oils can be diffused in crawl spaces, attics, garages, and any room in the house so long as people and pets are not exposed — at close range — to the vapor or mist for more than 3-5 minutes. Clove bud oil is one of the most effective and affordable oils that can be used to inhibit the growth of fungi. The oil sold on this page can also be used to eliminate unwanted mushrooms in the yard. It is very potent and can be diluted for exterior spraying. Elsewhere it can be misted and used full strength or diluted with another oil such as sweet orange.

Before assuming that diffusing is sufficient, think of all the places where mold might be growing, including HVAC systems, air conditioning units, dehumidifiers and humifiers, washing machines (yes, often), trim around windows, and any place where there is moisture, condensation, or deferred maintenance.
